Re: Tale From the Dragon's Keep

Lyle,

Did not mean to dis Tony's 983 in any way.  It was growing well and looking good until we had a three day heat wave about a week ago.  Even though it was under shade cloth for most the day, all the newer leaves on the plant fried.  The edges look like someone took a blow torch to them. All the older leaves took the heat and loved it.   The burned leaves have now grown out but are deformed and have lost most of their surface area. This has set the plant back a little.

Stir fried - leaves of the 983 Ciliberto grow deformed
after being fried by a heat wave.

While the Ciliberto fried in the heat, the 846 Calai purred and smacked its lips, the 789 Zunino sagged a bit and pushed it's vine out faster.  Both these plants had no shading and loved the heat.  The 937 Mombert showed a minor amount of burning with shading.  Only the Ciliberto cooked in the heat like baked Alaska on a hot plate.

This problem may be caused by a nutritional deficiency since the plant is in a new site and has not greened up as nicely as my others.  Today I drenched the site with an alphabet soup of goodies to try to set it right.  If anyone out there has any other ideas on what would make new leaves on a plant this heat sensitive please let me know.

So the 983 bows it's head low, burnt and deformed, while the 846 Calai sits on it's hill, majestic and powerful -  the center of the universe, the master of this world or so it would seem.

Last year my best looking plant, the 760 Patrick, produced my smallest pumpkin.  Adversary may spark the Ciliberto's inner rage and it will pop the biggest fruit.  We shall see... We shall see...

Good luck and grow them bigger.
