I did mean a 30 x 30 area for each plant.  Sorry for the confusion!  I think I'll go with the composted manure as it sounds much safer!

If you meant 30'x30' fine, I wouldn't go any less than 20'x20'.
30sq.ft. is is only 5'x6' patch which isn't enough for smaller pumpkins. Steer or cow manure is fine as long as it isn't to fresh. I prefer at least a yr. old put on in the fall or as old as possible, similar to compost. You can also buy composted manure at different places. If he gives it to you just make sure it's old.

my comment: 30 sq ft? Thats less than  8 leaves. You might need more room
than that.
