Ground hog devastation

List,
I am very depressed after a relatively small ground hog literally squeezed through a 12 gauge fence with 11/2"x 3" gaps (really unbelievable if you would have seen the size of the ground hog). He was stuck in the patch and had trouble getting out and almost got stuck). I don't have the heart to kill them. He/she ate 2' off both the 771 and 789 plants and tips to 1' off most secondaries. I've kept the borers at bay, devastated by deer last year and ground hogs in 1999. Don't know what to say. I'll just let them grow out and see what happens. Too many animals where we live near some very large woods. Good luck to everyone!:)
