I have done that many a time.  You can either a) turn it slowly like you

said, or b) depending on the size force the whole vine upside down back
over 
the top, probably couldn't do this once the vine has started to lay
down.  
The only other option I have ever used is growing it and then spiral the
vine 
back like a lollipop.
