Only do this during the hottest part of the day !  Otherwise, it's likely it will snap like a piece of celery at even the slightest movement.  Been there, done that  !

I would just try to redirect it as the vines start to run. If you start bending it to much at the base you will cause alot of stress and stand a big chance of it splitting the vine.
