My 691 Nesbitt and my 912 Holland 01 are flat vines...that split into 2 "main" vines....in years past I would have cut one off...this year I am trying making one the main vine and the other a "secondary" in my X-Tree pattern. I think a lot of the "red" gene pumpkins have "flat vines"...my 723 Bhaskaran last year was a 4" flat vine that broke into 2. The year before my 760 Patrick also was a flat vine and produced a 656 Bhaskaran. Anyways, I agree the 4" flat fine had areas that "dried up" and open'd up...but grew my biggest 2 pumpkins from the flat vines. :-)
One never knows in this hobby.

I have a plant that has begun to run with two main vines of equal length. Vines are two feet long at this time. I have been thinking of just cutting one vine off, but I am afraid that it may show other undesireable characteristics down the road. Fortunately, I have a backup plant in the same cloche. I guess I will watch it for a while and see what develops.
