Pumpkin Seeds
Steve:
When you think of pumpkin seeds, think of two different kinds, proven and
unproven. Proven seeds are those that have been known to produce a big
pumpkin. These seeds have been tried by some growers and have produced.
Unproven seeds are those that have not yet been grown. They may have great
genetics and potential but have not yet had a chance to do their thing. In
this category would be all of the seeds from last years pumpkin crop. They
are being grown this year and if at the weighoffs their offspring are big,
these seeds will be wanted by other growers for next year. Seeds have been
stored for 5 or more years and still germinate but not 100%. The germination
percentage becomes less each year. The Bobier and Calan you mentioned have
produced many great pumpkins and so people know this and want those seeds
believing it will enhance their chances. They pay big bucks for these seeds
in auctions etc. Keep in mind that a pumpkin can have up to 700 seeds in it.
