Re: 1020 Papez (& its roommate 594 Smith, the Octipumpkins; LONG LIVE THE ebay ESCAPEE 1062 RIVARD)

I keep reading all the troubles people are having with the 1020 papez, perhaps it is a blessing in disguise that it didn't germinate for me.  I would be very interested to hear from anyone on the list growing seeds from my last years pumpkins.

I have a Rivard plant too!  it's in my main patch and the smallest plant there.  not even six feet long (poised to take off), but it's showing a female bud, at this stage it's looking like it could be a squash! (nothing against them!)  plant is very green as is the embryonic fruit.  Will keep the list posted, weather here is being very odd, i just started feeding high nitro yesterday.

Best regards everyone

Cross them on both hands George.  My 1020 Papez & 594 Smith just bit the dust, same problem.  They were so kinked, it didn't matter how I tried to rearrange & support them. The 594 Smith I noticed a split at a joint, almost like a notch, as if it were a shell busting open to let something out. Both also split on the bottomside with the grain, plus the 1020 split on the topside about 3-4ft out (maybe stressed by the winds we had Sunday.) Neither have a big enough secondary between the stump & split. I buried much of the Papez with sifted compost, and I cut the Smith off just after the split. The Papez has a 2ndary about 8" long between the 2 splits and the Smith has one coming off the joint that split, about 5-6" long. Both showed healthy vine tips, the Papez had a leaf or 2 sagging a bit in the heat in the area of the split. They both looked like Doubles (double tendrils, symetrical leaves instead of alternating, double tips, etc.)

Happy to save I have a normal, non-mutant plant, the 1062 Rivard, which Rock sent seeds when I promised I'd grow them instead of (at that time when all the hoopla was going on with collections for sale,) sell them on ebay. I also have a backup 771 Rockwell that never made it into the ground, still sitting here, if Lyle doesn't want it, I'll plant it if the Papez doesn't spring back in the next week. Thanks Rock & Rocky.

So far mine has not gone crazy, showing its first female bud now.  Keeping my fingers crossed.
