Like you, I've been gardening since I was 6.  Now I am 60.  My first prizewinning pumpkin in 1949 weighed more than I did at the time, just over 70 pounds.
This is my first year of competive growing.
As for the exploding tips, I wonder if the osmotic pressure in the vines is too great for the plant  to withstand at certain times of rapid growth.  What causes it in some and not others is a mystery.

 So what have all you other growers concluded when you go out to the patch in the morning and find the tip of the main vine snapped off.
Could it be your growng rival from up the street or is it a sudden growth spurt that blows the end right off.
I havn't found any traces of critters,animal or human.
and very little wind ,atleast not enough to break the tip at approx 6-8 inches back from the end.
