The first SE Mn. pumpkin update was from Dave Bhaskaran whose pumpkins
are a beautiful bright orange. Our pumpkin patches are less than ten
miles apart, but our growing conditions ands soil are different. We help
each other during vacation time and carry on a friendly competition as
our pumpkins grow.
This year, I am growing seven pumpkin plants. The seeds from two plants
I wanted to grow ( 1049 Holland 01 and the 963 Stucker 02) did not
germinate, so I had to use some backups to complete my patch. Here are
my seven plants:
1) 1079.5 Beachy 02 -- 845 Bobier 00 x 723 Bobier 99 -- Germinated in 46
hours and was seed number 307.
2) 1016 Daletas 01 -- 705 (UOW) Stelts 99 x 846 Calai 99 -- Germinated
in 66 hours.
3) 369 (UOW) Heyne 02 -- 656 Bhaskaran 00 x 650 Heyne 00 -- Germinated
in 54 hours. Wanted to plant this seed as the 656 Bhaskaran and the 650
Heyne had some good characteristics and I wanted to see what might
result.
4) 1075 Daletas 01 -- 790 Daletas 00 x 705 (UOW) Stelts 99 -- Germinated
in 69 hours.
5) 1079.5 Beachy 02 -- Same as #1 -- Germinated in 54 hours and was seed
number 306. This is one of my back up pumpkin plants. To this point, the
Beachy plants are the best in my patch.
6) 1027 Hester 02 -- 1230 Daletas 01 x 1075 Daletas 01 -- Germinated in
90 hours. This is my smallest plant by far. It looks like a miniature
pumpkin plant - not much vigor shown. Is anyone else growing the 1027
Hester? If so, how is your plant doing? Right now, I do not plan to use
this plant for pollination unless it really takes off.
7) 650 Heyne 00 -- 690 Bernard 99 x 511.5 Heyne 99 -- Germinated in 162
hours ( had given up on it). Right now, it is a much bigger plant than
the 1027 Hester.
At the end of May, my plants were generally further along than most
years. The first week of June has slowed the growth of the plants as the
temperatures have been cool. The plants are just starting to vine and
with some warm temperatures, they should take off. Today is the first
day since early May that we have had any moisture and this should help
all plants in the garden.
That is it for this planting report from SE Mn.
