Plastic makes all the difference.  Can't imagine trying without it!  My 
Grandmother first saw it in her Uncle's science room in Germany in 1902.  Plastic - 
mulch - rowcover - drip irrigation tube.  .5 inches today - same tonight and 
.25 inches tomorrow.  Let it rain!
