Flower Pruning??
Hello All
We have several females set on a main on the 575 Simmons plant. The first
is about 10 ft out. All the females are about 4 ft apart on the main. The 575
is a very Awesome plant. It has very nice sized leaves and the secondaries are
doing great. I am terminating the secondaries about 10 ft out on each side. I
just set the last female on the main this morning for a total of about 4 on
the main itself. We have a very nice shade system set up over the plants with
a misting system under the shade cloth to try to help keep the plants cool
when it get hot.
The questions I need to ask are about pruning female and male flowers. I am
going to let the main go out a ways before I decide if I am going to terminate
it. Now comes the part I would like to find out more about. What do the
growers, who have grown larger size pumpkins, do about flower pruning. Do you
go ahead and let them bloom? Do you leave the female on and then let it abort
itself or do you cut it off before it blooms? I have been wondering if by
letting the flowers bloom if that takes some of the energy away from the
pumpkin gaining size? I know I will have to decide soon which pumpkin is going
to be the keeper and cull the rest.
Thanks for any help you can give.
