Mike,
Shading is done to help keep the skin on the pumpkin soft so that it can
expand quickly as the pumpkin grows. If the pumpkin is left fully exposed to
the sun it will develop a thicker tougher skin that may crack as it expands.
I also shade the main vines in the heat of the day (when temps are up in the
90's) to also protect the leading edge of the main vine (it's very tender)
from getting "cooked" from the heat of the soil.
