Thanks for your help.  We do not have any problems with the seeds sprouting.  In fact, we were packing for family camp on Friday and noticed about 20 pumpkin plants sprouting in the field.  We have not planted anything yet, so these are from a pumpkin that we left in the field from last year.  Have no idea what type they are, either jack-o-lanturn or Prize winner.   

What is the best way to transplant them.  How far out would the root system be if the only have the dicots and the first true leaf?

Tad, I hope this is helpful to you.  It might be a good idea to have a Pollination Day for the scouts... Or find out what attracts hoverflies and bumblebees...

You could also try this question out on bigpumpkins.com.  There're a few more biggie experts on that site, and several who grow commercially, facing the same problem you have posed.

Bees help pollinate.  You may have had pollination problems from heat or to much moisture on the flowers MB

 My best Pumpkins 758 and 719 had the largest but totally wrinkled dicots I

 I direct seeded several of my plants last year BUT, this will answer your 
question on why we don't direct start them very often. 

  1.  We control everything about these plants and if you only have one or 
two seeds we can't risk loosing one to a Bird, Squirrel or mother nature in the 
way of the ground being too cool. I lost a few due to that in years past.

  2. here is the most important for Bob Troy and Myself.. in small gardens we 
have to know where the main vine will go because we can't risk having to turn 
the main vine in our small patches. I had to turn my DIRECT STARTED 845 
Bobier last year and the main vine went same direction as the small hole so I was 
stuck. it was planted 2 feet from a wall and as I turned it slowly it pinched 
and almost died.. It was a silver bullet and pulled out somewhat but I won't do 
that again.

I've dug my pit, filled it with compost and covered it up with dirt. And planted my pumpkin on a hill of compost and dirt.

My question is...
Can I cover the hill and surrounding area with newspaper before I cover the whole area with straw? I have always had a chickweed problem in my patch and I am determined to have my patch as weed free as I can get it. Straw has never been enough.

 I tried that for my tomatoes six years ago and Yes it worked but it had 
Inherent problems. One was it was hard to get the sheets to stay down I used bent 
pieces of coat hanger and sticks. The other thing is once it got wet it Bonded 
with the soil and then the weed seeds just germinated right through it! I 
have tried many types of weed blocks and have used TONS of straw all has its up 
and down sides best thing I have found is that I am doing this year I have my 
Hula hoe/Scuffle hoe and every three days I go out there and scuffle all the 
young weeds. yeah i know it is hard and takes an extensive matrix of walking 
boards but I have 2000 sqft at home and about 5000+ sqft that I share at the 
satellite patch if you can keep up with it, it really works well !! 
   Hope you get it under control!

Well, most of you will remember me. I am back after my computer being down 
for a few months I have it working somewhat while I am transferring to DSL. 
wanted to say HI and let you know I was still growing. this is what I have going I 
have the 600.5 Gregory, 1016 Daletas, 695 Handy and my mystery green seed at 
home. at the satellite patch I have the 1026 Holland, two 968 Stellpflug, 658 
Emmons, 600 Reynolds, 654 Troy, 505 Smith, Four 73 Smiths,962 Sherwood, 345 
Gregory and a 350 Smith. three weeks ago many of the great southern CA growers 
joined me for a green house pitching party and we put up a 45 foot x 32 feet 
green house over my back patch. we used Remay and it is REALLY neat in there. 
the 600 Gregory and 1016 Daletas are very large but the 695 Handy is something 
special .... the mystery green seed is just that !! there are so many of you CA 
growers that want Bobs record I won't tell ANYONE what it is till it hits the 
scales HE HE HE got to keep some secrets..
    My wife is a little over 7 months pregnant and is due in July she is 
coming along well, I am VERY Excited! 
   Well, just wanted to say Hi and let all of you know I was still alive and 
Kickn !! Got to go watch the Lakers !!! Take care and I TRULY wish all of you 
the best season you have ever had !! Take care and grow em Big !!!
