There are several reasons that the pumpkins are set a good distance (10 to
12 feet or more)
from the main stump........
if the pumpkin is set too close to the stump it can (as it grows larger)
pull the stump out of
the ground as the stem of the pumpkin and the vine will be evelated 2 ft. or
more
above the ground.
Also, if the pumpkin is set 10 to 14 feet out, it will have a larger
"factory" of nutrients to draw
from (the factory being a larger root system and side vine network and leaf
canopy).
