RE: seasonal perils

1.) Fairly common if we don't take steps to control various pests. These
steps are not difficult given the current chemical control options so losing
the entire farm has become pretty rare.

2.) Squash Bugs or Cucumber Beetles? Cucumber beetles are yellow with black
spots or stripes. Merit as a drench & an occasional spray with Triazicide
will control both though the timing differs by region.

3.) See #2. Bacterial Wilt is vectored by Cucumber beetles. Get them under
control your BW problems go away.

I would prefer an organic program too. But having spent 25 years in the
Green Industry has made me a realist. I don't spend all these hours
preparing a full course meal for insect pests. We are on top of the food
chain for a reason.

Subject: seasonal perils

Greetings all,

I have a few questions about this big pumpkin hobby of mine.

1) How common is it to loose your whole crop?
I had beginners luck 1 out of 4 years.

2) Can you win the squash beetle war?
I have been carefully inspecting twice a day: squishing beetles and
scraping eggs.

3) What is your favorite method to combat bacterial wilt?
I suppose I could read the archives. I am a fan of organic techniques,
but not exclusively. This year effective is critical.

Thanks in advance for your comments.
