It's been so long since I've contributed anything on this list,... I guess
I'll field this one.

Hi Cathy,

If the plant has been outside since April 20th and hasn't produced any
vines, yes, I'd say that something is wrong. Especially in your warm
climate.

One thing to mention... normally you can't keep these seedlings inside very
long. The first two leaves are "seed leaves" and are different in appearance
from the "true" leaves that follow. As soon as the first true leaf is
starting to form (3 to 5 days after germination) you need to find a place
for it in the patch.

Having said that, I don't think that is your problem unless the plant was
seriously root bound.

I hope someone didn't put bush-type Jack-'B-Littles in your seed packet.

I would suggest, send a picture, but this list doesn't handle pictures. So
to the group, what think ye? Can a root bound plant have issues to the point
that it doesn't send out vines?

I do hope your plant starts to vine. You could send me a picture (not to the
list).

Best regards, Cliff

Subject: Pumpkin Problem

Hello,

This is my first time to attempt growing a giant pumpkin. I started with a
pack of seeds called Atlantic Giants. I know these seeds are not
"pedigreed,"
but I thought it would be an inexpensive way to get started. When I planted
my seedling on April 20 I had about 3-4 very nice leaves developed. We dug
a really big hole, back filled with dirt and compost. I've kept it watered,
but I don't think over watered. The plant has not sent out any vines at
all, but has two blooms. The blooms seem healthy, but I know this can't be
normal.

Any suggestions on what may have happened, or are my packaged seeds just
trash.

Thanks,
Cathy Ridgdill
