Subject: When to pollinate

My first female flower buds appeared this morning. The males have been
blooming for about a week. The vines are about 8' long. I hadn't planned to
pollinate till about July 1, and that's three weeks away.

My first weighoff will be for the Kansas State Fair, about September 11, and
my second chance is early October, I think about the 3rd or 4th.

This is Kansas, and I expect to have extremely hot temperatures in July and
August (100-105F, with some nights not going below 90F). I'll have no
shortage of water supply and my nutrient supply should be excellent, too.

Shall I think seriously about going ahead with pollination in a few days, or
wait the three weeks till July 1? What advice can you give me?

cheers,
duchess of gladstone
