Hi John
I designed my patch to resemble a xmas tree. The seedling is planted at
the base of the patch where you would normally find the trunk of a xmas
tree. The main vine grows straight out to the tip of the patch. The
secondary vines nearest the plant will grow out the widest. I bury
those vines as they grow out. Under each leaf I put some Mycorrhizal
powder or tablet under the vine where the root will grow. The
mycorrhizal fungi will increase the growth of the root and thus provide
more food for the plant. All tertiary vines are cut off. In addition I
brew up some compost tea in a 33 gallon trash can. I'll mist the plant
with the tea. It adds good fungi and bacteria to the plant in combating
the bad microbes. To stop the vine from growing, just pinch off the tip
and bury it. All the above is standard stuff in growing an AG.
cheers
Marc

Marc,
Would you then suggest letting secondary and tertiary vines growing to
a certian length and then burying?
And is it necessary pinch the end of the vine or would it be best to
just bury the tip?
Thanks Jay

Hi Duchess
Consider this. The leaves from the main root to the pumpkin is what feeds
the pumpkin. Leaves past the pumpkin provide minimal nourishment to the
fruit. So I would pollinate around fourteen feet from the main root. Wait
till July 1st. and then pollinate.

My first female flower buds appeared this morning. The males have been
blooming for about a week. The vines are about 8' long. I hadn't planned
to
pollinate till about July 1, and that's three weeks away.
My first weighoff will be for the Kansas State Fair, about September 11,
and
my second chance is early October, I think about the 3rd or 4th.
This is Kansas, and I expect to have extremely hot temperatures in July
and
August (100-105F, with some nights not going below 90F). I'll have no
shortage of water supply and my nutrient supply should be excellent, too.
Shall I think seriously about going ahead with pollination in a few days,
or
wait the three weeks till July 1? What advice can you give me?
cheers,
duchess of gladstone
