I didn't realize tomatoes were self-pollinating(duh on me). Thanks for
enlightening me. My question concerned after I pollinate the female flower by
hand, would blossom set( which is basically calcium chloride) help produce a
big one. My understanding is that calcium is a necessary, and often
overlooked, mineral in the making of a giant pumpkin, and I wondered if what
works for tomatoes would help pumpkins. Thanks for the reply. Steve.

Tomatoes are self pollinating. Meanwhile pumpkins produce separate male and
female blossoms. Therefore, the pollen from the pumpkin male bloom needs to
be transferred to the pumpkin female blossom (the female bloom is easily
identified because of the small fruit growing directly behind the bloom). This
can be done by bees or other insects or by hand. Giant pumpkin growers
usually perform this task manually.
Blossom Set for tomatoes has been around for a long time and I am not sure
that it actually works other than by spraying the tomatoe blossom, you cause
pollen to be dispersed from the anthers to the stigma which sets a fruit.
Gentle flicks of the tomato blossom between 8 am to 10 am is the best time for
tomatoes to be pollinated by hand.
