Hi Folks,
While I wholeheartedly thank those on this post for their service to this
country- I'll keep this "punkin-y".
All 10 of the plants I have are doing well. Even after one plan got ripped off
at the base between the cotyledons, I kept it watered
and now has regrown 4-6 leaves sprouting straight from the "root"- no clear
vine as yet.
The others have 5-7 vines that are 8' to 15' long. Some are near enough to
other plants that they're growing together.
They have been producing male blooms like crazy and I've been working so
haven't had a chance to pinch them off yet. I did go through and pinch off all
the proximal female blooms in order to wait for the vines to grow longer, wait
for more distant (out near the end of the vine) female blooms to develop and
thus have a longer vines with more leaves available to nourish the pumpkin
once it forms. Does this make any sense? Please feel free to comment and also
to suggest how exactly to determine when, how and which vines (secondary,
tertiary or whatever) to prune away.
Should I wait until one of the vines develops a good "distant on the vine"
candidate and then prune the other vines away?
Other than that, I'm going to go out weed some more and water and fertilize
with some good Neptune's Harvest Fish and Seaweed gunk.
In St. Louis its been an extremely wet spring and early summer. Now it's been
fluctuating between thunderstorms and 100 degree days that were so hot my feet
got burned when I weeded the patch barefooted. I'm amazed at how the vines can
take the heat with only a bit of wilting during the hottest parts of the day.
Thanks for listening and offering any and all advice.
