Diana,
A lot of growers make a 90 degree turn (bend) in the main right past the
fruit, this must be done in the peak of the day (hottest part) so the
vine is pliable, almost rubber like. You can do this in one two three or
how ever many small bend you feel comfortable with, or all at one shot,
just remember, don't force it too much, if you hear the celery snap, you
know you went too far....
Doing this bend, there is no bad position on the vine, I usually take 3
or 4 ft of main and move it over in one shot.
I hope this helps.

I understand HOW to pollinate the female flowers, and appreciated all
the tips for covering the blossoms. BUT, would someone please explain
to this complete novice about how to provide enough growing room so that
the pumpkin doesn't break itself off the vine? I hope I worded that so
that it can be understood. THanks.

by the way, seven of my original nine pumpkins are going to make it,
despite rain and hail and high winds, and I planted two more seeds which
will give me an opportunity to use the information I keep gaining
everyday from what's happening to the other seven! Maybe I can actually
work these two into some sort of "shape." The other seven are scattered
and broken and the parts are all growing nicely.

cheers,
