This is a good question. I have pondered why so much attention to the main vine. It is my belief (but I have never proved it)that if the main vine is terminated that the plant would push it's energy into it's lateral vines. Probably the first two laterals coming out from the plant would be the first to show the extra energy because they are more mature than the others. In theory, you should be able to make any of the laterals the dominant vine by careful pruning. Again, I have not done this, but don't see why you can't. Perhaps someone with more experience in abandoning the main vine can shed some info on the subject. My opinion is to pinch out one of the main leaders and make the other one your dominant vine.
