I haven't grown the big ones yet, just "regular" pumpkins. I would also
say it depends on your soil. Here near Memphis the soil is very clay
and will bond with water, so I had a hard time overwatering my pumpkin
plants in the areas that weren't well amended.

What I've been told is check moisture of dirt about 1-2 inches below
surface. If it's still moist down there you don't need to water again
yet.
