Debbie,
I keep most of my secondaries. As the pumpkin grows, I usually have to
remove some secondaries on both sides of the vine to remove some of the
stress on the main vine and the stem of the pumpkin. Some growers do remove
a few secondaries, but I do not unless there are problems.
Your vine definitions are correct.

George, do you keep all of your secondaries? To make sure I understand,
the secondaries come directly off the main? And the tertiary comes off
the secondary?

Debbie,
I use the Christmas tree method and it works well for me. I would NOT use
a reverse Christmas tree. You want your secondaries to be behind the
pumpkin and close to the stump. I use small scissors to cut the tertiary
vines. If I bury the vines at the same time, the area where the tertiary
was cut is usually covered with soil. The pruning starts as soon as the
tertiaries start growing which is now. The cut is fairly close to the
vine.

What type of pruning methods does the gang use? I was reading DL's World
Class Pumpkins III and it discussed the christmas tree and flag pole.
Does any one use these? Can I do a reverse Christmas tree, or are the
secondaries near the stump too important?
Also, do you use garden shears to prune? Do you cover the cut with soil?
When do you start pruning? How close to the main (or secondary) do you
cut?
Debbie
