Eastern Ontario Update

Dear Fellow Growers-my update to the group

June 2-first Flea Beetles on plants--Sevin

June 8-first striped cucumber beetles--Sevin

June 10-new official high of 33.2 C,91.8 F.,some leaves suffering sun damage.

June 12-it finally rained,did it ever,1.65 inches in 1 hour.With the rain
there was even some hail at times(ice pellets)which blasted holes through
the tender leaves. There was not 1 drop of rain from sometime in April until
June 12.

June 13-longest vine 42 inches and 2 plants with leaves 19 inches
across,with holes.

Comment-the 42" vine is 1-2 days behind my 8 year average so all is OK.I
expect to catch up to my average at first pollination.

The mid-west(US) has had it cool and wet which extended to Maine and Nova
Scotia while further north we have had an usually period of hot and dry weather.

All areas have less than ideal weather from time to time but when you go to
your local weigh-off site on Oct 4,all growers will have had the same
general weather which puts us on nearly the same footing with other local
growers.

That is,whether it's Alabama,Windsor,Topsfield,Half Moon Bay or Sarnia,if
you can land in the top 10 you are truly a successful grower.

Also anyone anywhere who grows a personal best is always a winner.A personal
best should be the objective of all growers. Those in less than ideal
climates should not be discouraged by 1000 pounders in the better growing
regions since your result for your climate is what determines a good
grower.That is,compete with yourself,not the Greers's and Zehr's of the sport.

Will report again in a few weeks--Al Eaton
