Hi Jack: Well the month of May here was exceptionally cold and things
didn't get started to grow until early June when the warm weather
finally arrived. My best plant had its first male flower yesterday (June
27). It has a main vine about 12' long and has the first female with
pumpkin at the end of that vine today. Also has five side vines running
out up to about five feet so far.. This plant is off my 897 of 1996.
Al Eaton was over today for a visit and to see my patch...I have 8
pumpkins in the main garden with 10125 sq feet of area for them which
works out to over 1200 sq. ft. for each plant. Garden measurements are
135' X 75'.
My best one (above) is in a 30' X 40' area with a natural treeline
windbreak and is about 200 ft from the main garden area.
Three sides of the main garden I have planted a row of Giant sunflowers
on three sides with 2 rows of sweet corn outside the sunflowers for a
windbreak. These sunflowers grow to over 12' high.
I am hauling River water this year for watering as it is warm and has
much more nutrients for the plants than the well water I used last year
from 106' in the ground, with high calcium count.
Paul..........
