Mn Update

The month of May was fantastic for growing pumpkins this year. Even though
I planted my 13 plants on the same date as last year, the pumpkins were
10-14 days ahead. June is another story. It has been cold and windy and
the pumpkins have almost stopped growing. As of June 6, the pumpkins
still have larger leaves and longer vines then they did on June 11 of last
year. Now for some warmer weather.

The top seven pumpkins are:

1) 696.6 Klema - This plant has the largest leaves and vine length (16.5"
                 and 32.5"). No vine splits.
2) 520 Heyne - Leaf - 15", vine - 31"
3) 858 Baird - Plant has vine split from the ground to the cotyledon.
4) 500 Noffke - This is a seed from Alice.
5) 858 Baird - Plant has vine split from the ground to the cotyledon.
6) 496 Heyne - Leaf - 14", vine - 21"
7) 452 Heyne - Plant has vine split from the ground to the cotyledon.

The 739 Eaton also has a bad split from the ground to the cotyledon. The
Baird splits and the Eaton split occurred when the pumpkins were well
protected. To me, the splits seems to be genetic.

When I uncovered the pumpkins on May 30, I found my first cucumber beetle.
It was quickly dusted with Sevin. Have seen only one since and that was
today.

That's it from southeastern Minnesota.
