I make wire hoops and placed them over the pumpkins. Then I place a 6x10
foot piece of floating row cover (remay) over the hoops. Small wire hoops
are used to staple the floating row cover to the ground and dirt is also
placed along the edges. This is a great protection against wind, bugs, and
cool nights when the plants are young. 

I purchased the floating row covers from Jordan Seeds in Woodbury, Mn.
They have all types of sizes and length.
