Deer problems

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd share my friend, Vic's method for keeping deer and other 4 legged
vermin away from his pumpkin field. He uses nylon deer netting from the local
Ag center. He lives in upstate NY, and gets it at AGWAY. It is very
inexpensive.

It comes in 100 ft rolls, and is a mesh fabric, similar to the mesh bags the
grocer uses to market onions and citrus fruit. Anyway, the fabric is about 6
ft high, and is easily put up using rebar, no fasteners needed. Next comes the
best part....

He found, quite by accident that the deer netting works well just laid on the
ground around the patch. He began installing his deer fence one evening and
darkness fell before he was done, so he laid the mesh on the ground around the
patch. The deer came to it, but high tailed it when they stepped in it and
their hoofs got tangled. Evidently, it gives them the uncomfortable sensation
of being trapped, and they will not come near the patch.

He plans to install the deer netting with rebar and also lay some on the
ground again this year.

BTW, Vic is not online, so I will give you an update on his garden...soaked
his AG seeds end of MAY and planted directly into the soil, all germinated but
one. He burned these seedlings with insecticide by mistake. The weather in New
England has been odd, very cloudy, cool and rainy. He sprayed late in the
afternoon one cold overcast day, and within an hour, the sun came out and
burned his plants. The only survivors were eggplants and tomatoes. All the AGs
but one died, along with the cukes, hard squash and melons. He saved enough AG
seed, and replanted. Things are up again, but this setback will cost.

Good luck to all, I'm watching about 15 fruit on vines right now, to see if
they'll grow or drop.
