The weather has been doing ok for pumpkin growing this past
couple of weeks. The wind has been picking up a little in the evenings. At least
the rain has stopped long enough for the plants to grow
some. Two main plants growing. Eaton 664 - main vine 4 1/2 ft.
only male flowers showing at this
time. Leaves are about 18 inches across. Strong healthy
looking plant. I've been mounding the dirt over the vine as it grows. Being
careful not to cover the flowers The other pumpkin plant is from a 205 I grew from seed taken from a pumpkin I
grew last year. AG seed purchased from local seed store in
95. This plant has all female flowers. Main vine is about 3 1/2 ft long. The
vines are not as thick as the Eaton, but it's growing just as fast. 5 to 6
inches a day. Leaves are about 17 inches across. I'm also mounding the soil
around the vine. Being careful not to cover the female flowers. They are to
close to the main stock to grow. So far there 4 females. I hope they continue to
show until one is far enough away to pollinate. Because of my limited space only
one plant will be able to make it to the end of the season.
I'm hoping the Eaton will show female flowers soon. As I would like to use this
plant to grow my pumpkins on. It is the best looking of the
two plants.
Also, my co-workers at the Portland
Center For the Performing Arts think I'm a little crazy. Putting so much
time and energy into this type of hobbie. But, they do get a kick out of seeing
my pumpkins
each fall.
Good luck to All
