John, there are many styles out there but the most common used is this you
bury as many leaf juctions as you can.....there is timing involved as you
say ...you can't just go bury the main and put dirt on top of the
secondaries ....you have to wait til they clear 10 inches or longer from
the main...so when you put a shovel full of dirt on that leaf juction the
secondary does't get burried.......at the base of your plant you should see
some starts of male flowers sticking up..........these most likely will be
the first to open...........you may have to wait till your secondaries get
to 2ft as this will allow the flower stem at the leaf junction to get
taller ....then as you bury that leaf junction the flower should stick out
the top of the shovel mound.......now when you see a female(pumpkin) coming
on you want to let the vine have some slack ......this means let it grow
with the female pumpkin for a while with out bury the vine in this vicinity
say 4 ft you then try and scoot the vine back creating a "C" or an "S"
shape in the vine.(Don't try this in cool weather as the vine are brittle
wait for a hot day) The pumpkin should be on the outer edge of curve in the
middle of the "+C" or the outer curves of the "S+"...(where the plus sign
is)......it is this area of the vine you don't bury and don't let roots
from the vine stay attached.....sometimes they do and you cut the root
under the vine to free the vine from the ground so as the pumpkin grows the
vine is free to rise off the ground with the pumpkin ......if you don't
free vine the vine will stay rooted to the ground and the pumpkin stem will
rise with the pumpkin separating the two.......which you don't
want!!..............good luck brock
