You should be able to use just about any container for you are going to
take them out of it about a week after they come up and transplant them
into the garden. It is getting hot and late to get in. Use moist potting
soil, not wet. If you keep them in a closed plastic bag, clear
preferrably, you will not have to water. They will maintain there
moister content with no room to evaporate. Plants can pop up quick so
leave good room at the top. Peat pots restrict the roots movement. You
must be having a hard time if you can't afford a few peat pots! Life
gets that way for everyone at some time. Good luck.
