HI, Everyone! I'm glad to know that not everyone on this list has grown
pumpkins in the 700-1000 lb range. :-) This is my first year growing THE
BIG ONE and I was almost afraid to post an update for fear my trials and
tribulations would seem "small potatoes, or is that potatos?
Anyway, here is my up-date from Sugar Grove, Ohio (45 miles s.e. of Columbus)
one Atlantic Giant, fine until this morning
Have two 444 plants up and coming, I got these from John Failor (thanks John!)
two 346 giant squash (from John)doing fine
two 201 giant squash (from guess who?) also doing fine
two mixed AG/maxima squash (John) dead due the cuke bugs
Striped cuke beatles reared their ugly heads last Sunday. The first few
days, I hand-picked them and thought things were o.k. Wednesday after
work, I notice the little buggers had nearly wiped out the first set of
leaves on the plants so I sprayed with Sevin. The AG had just been set out
last weekend: it's stem was nearly 7 inches long! Anyway, I went out with
the girls last night so didn't check the garden. When I checked it out
today, the AG's stem is nearly white, basically non-existant on top and I
can see into it! Could this be from the Sevin combined with the heat we
had Friday (88')? Also have noticed tons of ants (that would be alot
wouldn't it? :-)) on some of my cantalope leaves. Upon further inspection,
found aphids underneath. Now my problem is, tomorrow the temps here are
supposed to reach 90. If I spray Sevin for my ant problem, will it burn my
cantalope leaves?
I saw three spotted cuke beatles tonight, which I joyously squashed!
If anyone has exhibited their pumpkins at the Circleville Pumpkin Show, I
would like to know how to apply, if you had any problems, good time, bad
time, etc.
Any help is appreciated!
Lisa Shumaker
