Marty:
Instead of setting target dates, do your best to cultivate your plants and
enhance their growth, which is the most important thing right now. The plant
will go through some bloom cycles, and when your plant has at least 300 or so
large leaves, you are ready to set fruit. This way, your pressure is off. You
are not forcing nature to perform against a time clock (a set up for failure)
and you won't have the guilt trip to deal with if you don't meet the date.
In the meantime, try not to get too antsy to cull plants just yet, unless room
is a real problem.
If you are really hoping to grow a large fruit, you need to grow a fine,
healthy plant FIRST. Once that's done, setting and keeping fruit will come
much easier.
Marty, can you get to a library, or phone to order a book? I suggest Don
Langevin's How to Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins. It covers many of the
questions you are asking and has beautiful color photos to reinforce the text.
Since you are on AOL, you can order the book online and have it within three
days by mail through Barnes and Noble. Use keyword Barnesandnoble and GO.
$11.96 plus $3.95 shipping. You can also order one directly from the author at
annedawn@aol.com If you do, my suggestion is to order the set....he has an
new book coming out this summer to compliment the first one.
It sounds as if you are commited to this sport. If so, I think these books
are required reading for you and anyone new to the world of AGs.
