AG Pumpkin Update from Minnesota

The last two weeks have been great for growing AG pumpkins in southeastern
Minnesota. The temperatures have been in the 70s and 80s and we have been
fortunate to receive about the correct amount of rainfall. The wind has
been strong at times, but the hoops I placed over the vines held them in
place; thus, no vine splitting or torn up plants.

The AG pumpkins provided me with a great Father's Day gift as six of my 13
plants showed female blossoms. Today (two days later), eight of the plants
have female blossoms and the two 858 Baird plants have two. If these first
female blossoms do not die (many usually do), I should be able to start
pollinating around the first of July. It was interesting to note that the
first five AG plants to set female blossom germinated first. There was not
much difference in the germinating time of the 13 pumpkins. The two 858
Baird and the 696 Klema germinated first.

Plant information:

1) 858 Baird - Vine = 10 feet, leaf = 21.5 inches, very vigorous - has
averaged 7.5 inches of growth per day over the last eight days. Has two
female blossoms. Grows low to the ground (Same for the other Baird)
2) 696 Klema - Vine = 9.3 feet, leaf = 21 inches, has been my most
vigorous until passed by the 858 Baird. One female blossom, nice plant
   and thick vine,
3) 858 Baird - Vine = 9.7 feet, leaf = 19.5 inches, very vigorous of late,
   has two female blossoms.
4) 452 Heyne - Vine = 8.5 feet, one female blossom
5) 500 Noffke (seed from Alice) - Vine = almost 9 feet, nice plant, one
   female blossom
6) 460 Heyne - Vine = 8 feet
7) 520 Heyne - Vine = 8.3 feet, one female blossom
8) 739 Eaton - Vine = Almost 7 feet, Started slow but now starting to
grow, had bad stem split coming out of the ground.
9) 520 Heyne - Vine = Just over 5 feet
10) 496 Heyne - Vine = 6.8 feet, has female blossom
11) 550 Noffke (seed from John) - Vine = 6.5 feet
12) 496 Heyne - Still growing after complete stem breakage (rot or
whatever), vine = 6.5 feet, one female blossom
13) 935 Lloyd - Vine 6.1 feet, a real slow grower

That is it from southeastern Minnesota. Will let you know when I pollinate
my first female.
