I have the same problem. One of my plants wilts in the 80's and the
other doesn't. One reason for this may be that one plant gets more sun than
the other, with the one getting more sun being more resistant to it. And I
know your correct about the roots. I have one of my pumpkins planted a bed
I raised along with really getting the soil lose, plus I use drip irrigation
to water it. The other doesn't have as lose of soil and I use the hose on
it. The one with the loser soil for better roots doesn't wilt and they both
get the same amount of water and fertilizer. All I would suggest now is
using some shade cloth to prevent wilting
