HI TO ALL LIST MEMBERS
As most of you must know I lost my Pumpkin Patch several weeks ago which has
meant that I am no longer able to take an active roll in growing Giant
Pumpkins. Ok, my heaviest Pumpkin may have only weighed 662 Lbs and is mere
chicken feed compared to most of your Pumpkins there in the US & Canada.
My proudest moment in Growing Giant Pumpkins was in 1997 when my good friend
Alun Jones from Liverpool grew a 743 from one of my 662 Seeds. My second
proudest moment was having grown not only my 1996 662 but also my 574, 543 &
463 Lb Pumpkins. My Third proudest moment was having Norm Craven sat at my
dinner table for Sunday lunch several years ago.
Above all I enjoyed the darn hard work that went into Growing my Giant
Pumpkins especially as our British climate is not exactly conducive to
Growing them which made the challenge even more difficult. One recent lesson
that I have learned is that sudden decisions should NOT be made public on
mailing lists such as this one as it only creates a storm in what is usually
a calm sea.
This posting MAY be my last on this list for a while as I want to concentrate
on things other than Pumpkins and distance myself from them. I have so many
Private e mail replies to make to those of you that replied Privately either
in support or against some sudden decisions that I made several weeks ago
regarding the Mombert 567.5 Seed that I have. That subject is over with now
and I want to forget I even have the Seed in my possession.
When I first came onto this Mailing List I informed everyone, via a posting
to the list, that I am the Chairman of a Pumpkin Society here in Great
Britain that had to close it's Membership due to lack of support from it's
Members with helping me run the Society. Also the lack of interest in Giant
Pumpkins here is another reason to suspend the activities of the Society
which exists in name only.
If I had the support from our Newspapers and other media in helping me to
promote the Growing of Giant Pumpkins in Great Britain I may consider
renaming the Society and attempt to revive a dyeing or near dead interest in
Growing Giant Pumpkins here. Funding is the obvious obstacle that has to be
overcome in order to revive a National Group here as is the organising of a
National Weigh-Off. This idea is just a thought and not a definite decision
and I guess that I was just thinking out loud again but who knows.
Finally, I have masses of e mails to reply to and if you sent a private e
mail to me recently I apologise for not having replied just yet but I will
try and get around to replying as soon as possible. I may continue to read
postings put onto the list as it has become a habit to do so every evening.
GOOD LUCK AND BEST WISHES TO EVERYONE AND MAY YOUR PUMPKINS BE YOUR BEST EVER
MIKE TURNER
