The science journals in which scientists publish their work cost about
$100 to $400 per year. Now such journals could be free on the internet.
However, the publishing companies which are making high profits on them
do not allow free access to them online. People like me can't afford
those prices and most libraries can't afford them. Therefore, most
science journals are not easily available to students and scientists.
There has been talk for years about the need to make scholarly science
available to the public free. I have written to many scientists who are
thinking about making science journals free online. So far no one has
done so--until today.
I hereby announce GeneticsReview@onelist.com as a free online science
journal. Scientists, students, and others are encouraged to submit a
review of any aspect of genetics. Reviews are the main type of scholarly
article which enable scientists, students, and laymen to keep abreast of
the advances in science. Just as in the printed reviews, this online
review will be corrected by editors and scientists before they are
published online. This is to insure that errors do not appear online.
Anyone may get a free subscription at
http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/GeneticsReview Each paper will come to
your e-mailbox as soon as it is ready to be published or you can read
them in the archives. The shared files section will offer 5 MB of
introductory materials to help you understand the vocabulary,
principles, and methods of modern genetics.
To make this a success, we need readers, editors, and authors. If you
are interested in writing, editing, or otherwise helping with this novel
effort, please write Harold Eddleman at the address below. Any mail you
send to GeneticsReview@onelist.com will be ignored; this is a oneway
pipe delivering quality genetics papers to you.
The editorial policy is that articles will be understandable by
students and lay people who are willing to use the shared files to learn
words they do not understand. This is a great experiment. I urge
everyone to join now to show authors that there is an audience of people
who want to learn via the internet. We will begin with some quality
short articles as soon as possible.
