Alan,
Blowing off the ends is a term Jack LaRue came up with when a plants' runners 
are growing so fast that gravity doesn't have time to pull them to the ground 
before they get too much weight beyond the point where the runner touches the 
ground and they break off.  It looks like they were blown off from a cannon 
inside the runner.
I am not sure if it is a good analogy or not, but the term sounds cool.
