gypsy worms/caterpillers

I have run into a brick wall. I am beside myself.. 2 days ago, I found
out the hedge row behind me had thousands of gypsy worms in them, and so
I called local Agway to find out the recommended cure for them, which
they said was either Liquid Sevin, or a product called BT. I opted for
the Sevin, seeings how I have alot of it, and commenced to spray the
dickens out of the hedge row. I also hit my AG plant fearing that it was
next. The next morning (yesterday), I woke up to find piles (hundreds)
of dead caterpillars laying at the foot of the hedge row. Some were
still alive.. and tons of them survived in the hedge row of spruces..
Well, to cut to the chase, Tonite, I come home from work, and find my
three female pumpkins that were getting within a week of pollenation
bitten and shredded.. My heart has sunk.. All my work and research has
been backed up 2 weeks by this incident, and now the closest main vine
female I have is 16 ft(10 days from pollenation at best )... on the
Ciliberto697. The Mombert866 plant hasnt taken the hit like the 697 has,
but I did take a pic of it, where the main vine split into two mains. It
was a flat vine that decided to go its seperate direction. My sprayer is
tired and resting tonite, as I dumped a crapload more liquid sevin on
the hedge row tonite, and again on the AG plant to try and protect it
from more attacks..Please.. help me.. One question, would you start
covering the females with cheese cloth to protect it from the
caterpillars in the future, or will this create too hot of an
environment for the female, and cause it to abort, or maybe some other
suggestions out there for me? I am stumped and depressed.....One
thought, as I have not actually witnessed the caterpiller eating the
females is this.. maybe a bird got the females as it tried to eat some
of the caterpillers?
