The coil things are common in vining plants. The plant uses them to hold
itself down untill it sends a root into the ground. As for breaking them
off, it will not hurt plant but you do create a entry point for plant
diseases. I usually just let them do their thing. They seem to not hurt the
plant itself so I do not worry.
