some advice needed



     here's my $.02: you said that plant (b) was more vigorous, but you
didn't mention wether or not it had any other vines on it.  It is POSSIBLE
that that particular plant could have more than one main vine (my largest
last year had 3, this year my largest has 2).  That might be something to
consider when you make your choice.  It might not necessarily be a total
loss.  It's a tough choice, hard to say, you're going to have to decide
between vigor, with some damage, or little vigor with no damage, only you
can make that decision.  Maybe, if all else fails, go for the eeny meeeny
miney mo method, or the flip a coin method.  Those techniques are tried and
true!!
