oof.

Hi folks,

Well, my season was going ok. A little bit of a late start, but coming
along nicely nonetheless. The biggest problem was that crazy tree that was
too close to the patch. So I hired the tree people, scheduled them for
Friday, told them I HAD to be there while they worked, scheduled leave from
my job, and was gathering stuff to cover all the pumpkins... picnic tables,
benches, boards, straw bales... everything imaginable to build bunkers
around and over them while the tree came down.

Yesterday was going nicely, too... right up until I got home and found that
the tree people found an open spot in their schedule and took the tree,
without calling me first. My Wallace 567.4, which was growing slowly but
was very sturdy, had it's main vine completely smashed. About 4 ½ feet out
from the base, there's a 15-inch section of vine that was in ribbons. The
growing tip was limp on the ground.

I don't need to explain to you all the wave of nausea that came next.

First aid: daconil, liquid seaweed everywhere, bury the vine with compost &
some alfalfa pellets. This morning, more seaweed, plus Rootone all around
the area. Amazingly, this morning the bit of the growing tip that wasn't
buried looked a little bit perky, though I will be astounded if it survives.
I suspect my best hope now is for some strong secondaries to come out from
that 4+ feet of main.

At least the patient is getting more sun now.

The Marcellus only took one small bump. I'm sure it will be fine. The Rado
was untouched.

We go from here. Would appreciate any good thoughts you could send out.
Hey PumpkinWitch, wherever you are, your powers are needed, girl!

I feel like I've got a big rock in my stomach.

Beth
