Jim,
Just received some disturbing info on the effectiveness of Sevin and now
Methoxychlor on the vine borer. I have been using Asana for a few years (
Asana is effective but you must have a licence to buy it). Talked to Dr.
Ashley of Univ. of Connecticut today......Ashley is a veteran vegetable
specialist who mainly deals with commercial growers. He told me that a fellow
professor, Dr. Jude Boucher had done extensive field trials with Sevin,
Methoxychlor, Asana, etc. The patches treated with Sevin and Methoxychlor
showed the same amount of borer damage as the untreated patches. Asana was
effective. This is not good for people using products available to the
homeowner. I am not saying to discontinue spraying these, but it's not great
news. I will try to get in touch with Boucher. I tried to contact Cornell's
bug specialist, but he wasn't in. That's it for now.
