vine borers and male flowers

My son asked a question that I could not answer, so I thought I would ask
the pros. He asked if moth balls would help protect against the vine borer
moth? While I understand that it would be difficult to treat an entire
patch with moth balls, has anyone ever tried dissolving them in water and
applying with a sprayer?
My brother also was curious what would cause a lack of male flowers? He
has set four pumpkins using flowers from my plants since he only had two
male flowers and both of those were eunechs(sp?, lacking anther). Any ideas?
