I have had problems with this in the past.  I had squirrels & wood chucks 
biting my
females. What I did was, cut the leaf & side vine off that is next to the 
female 
blossom and cover it with a laundry basket. cut holes in the handles so the 
vine
can go through. Put some weight on top of the basket, so it cant get tipped 
over.
This should stay over the pumpkin until  it out grows the basket.
