Update from SE Mn.

With all the warm weather in the area for the past week, the pumpkin
plants have really taken off. All eleven plants have started at least
one female. The first male bloom appeared today. I expect that
pollination will start on Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week..

The best plant by far is the 740 Wray 98. It has the largest leaves and
longest vine. As of Saturday, eight female flowers have started on this
plant. This plant is larger than any of my plants at this time last
year. If the pumpkins grow like the plant, a big one is on its way.

The next three plants which have done quite well are the 400(uow) Heyne
98, 858 Baird 97, and the 968 Sproule 98.

An observation -- No matter how big or vigorous the plant, all plants
showed a female flower within a couple of days of each other. In mid
June, the 765.5 Bruce 98 lost its main vine and now another vine has
taken it place (about 3-4 feet in length). It showed a female flower. It
seems like the plants decided that they had been in the ground for a
certain length of time and now it was time to set female flowers no
matter how big or small the plant. Has this happened to anyone else?

Used my pump for the first time today to water the plants and the water
really did wonders for the plants. From looking droopy and downtrodden,
they perked up and really looked good. Water does wonders! The water is
pumped from a small creek with a gas Honda pump. Much easier then
carrying the water via five gallon buckets.

That is it from the patch this week. It is time to start pollinating!
