RE: Bird Damage to fruit

Although I really like George's idea of the laundry basket, I'll throw in
that I have used torn porch screening (when we replace old or damaged
screen) to protect veggies and strawberries. Some screen is stiff and you
can bend it over the plants and stick it a few inches in the ground. Some
is more pliable and is easier to lay over the plants. I doubt it would
offer much protection against large hail. I only wish I'd been using screen
already as I lost one plant this weekend to (presumed ) bird damage.

I use ordinary #6 bags on my corn ears to exclude pollen and bird
damage. The same bags should work for pumpkins. I use the bags 2 years
for 4 months. You might use a spring clothlespin to close bag. The might
also offer other protections. Remove it before it deforms the fruit at
several days.
