I will try to help clarify some of those watering issues:
A submersible sump pump is a pump that likes to pump lots of water, volume
gpm. The water it pumps in most cases helps keep it cool. If you connect
it to a sprinkler head, you cannot pump enough water to keep the pump cool.
Pumps are sold in two fashions, a pump that pumps alot of gpm or a pump
that can generate head (which is pressure). A lot of this can be found on
a pump curve which tells you the gpm at what pressure (or head). 1 foot
of head is = to 0.433psi So 50 foot of head is equal to about 21 psi.
You can get pumps that have both good gpm and supply plenty of head. But
mostly for pumpkin growing, since you are only using misters or low gpm
sprinkler heads, a pump with good head (pressure) is great to use.
I have been putting together some spreadsheets in Excel to help with my
system that I want to design. Below is some data I would like to share.
It might help some growers in putting together a system.
Nozzle Spray Radius how many gallons for 1" of water fall
20' 782
19 706
18 634
17 565
16 501
15 440
14 383
13 330
12 281
11 236
10 195
9 158
8 125
7 95
nozzle output in gpm gallons, 30 mins a day, 4 days gallons, 20
min day, 4 days
0.5 60 40
1.0 120 80
1.5 180 120
2.0 240 160
2.5 300 200
3.0 360 240
3.5 420 280
4.0 480 320
4.5 540 360
5.0 600 400
5.5 660 440
6.0 720 480
6.5 780 520
7.0 840 560
With this information I can pick out a nozzle with a gpm and radius, then
figure from the tables how long I need to run this nozzle per week to get
my 1" of water fall. You can mix and match.
Example: I personally need a 12' radius nozzle, so from the table I need
to put out 281 gallons to get my 1" of water fall. So I would pick the
3.5 gpm output nozzle and water 20 mins a day, 4 days a week.
I hope this helps.
